I worked for a company called Grantieville which was the New York sales office for a South Carolina textile mill. I have great memories of the job and the area.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23925148.post-38352562133042740922008-01-19T21:33:00.000-05:002008-01-19T21:33:00.000-05:00The sloped facade has a nice, almost subversive el...The sloped facade has a nice, almost subversive elegance about it. :-)Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02419484925045586473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23925148.post-62309876925604903502008-01-07T17:34:00.000-05:002008-01-07T17:34:00.000-05:00Beth - the resemblance to the Solow Building at 9 ...Beth - the resemblance to the Solow Building at 9 West 57th St. is no coincidence - the initial, rejected design for the facade of that building was used by Bunshaft for the Grace Building. I add this to the posting - I forgot to include this when writing the story. There's a slot of story in this place.

Rambling - The building is better like by the populace at large than by the critics. It one of the first buildings I was acutely aware of. It's unique profile and the stark contrast with buildings around it makes an impression on those who are not particularly interested in architecture.Brian Dubéhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12579167361224067819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23925148.post-31267499224612186772008-01-07T14:07:00.000-05:002008-01-07T14:07:00.000-05:00I think the sloping exterior looks rather graceful...I think the sloping exterior looks rather graceful.Janethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09187924454780490386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23925148.post-20310889091210075802008-01-07T13:04:00.000-05:002008-01-07T13:04:00.000-05:00My dad used to work in this building until he reti...My dad used to work in this building until he retired in the early '90s (he worked for a company that owned textile mills). It was the first office building I'd been in that creaked in a high wind. I know HBO used to have offices in the building but I haven't been there in a while now so I'm not sure if that's still the case.

Brian, do you know anything about 9 West 57th St. (the one with the big number 9 in front)? It's almost a duplicate of this one - amazing that a building so reviled would have a twin in the same city!bethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14707934057380538616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23925148.post-76368999692952680872008-01-07T12:11:00.000-05:002008-01-07T12:11:00.000-05:00lorelai;There are a number of office tenants inclu...lorelai;
There are a number of office tenants including, I believe, Time Warner.Brian Dubéhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12579167361224067819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23925148.post-83746177528616290412008-01-07T11:16:00.000-05:002008-01-07T11:16:00.000-05:00So who uses the building now?
