Lights, Camera, Action!

In the past few years, the filming of television and movies has turned NYC into a giant set. This has become big industry for New York, and although it can be somewhat disruptive, basically we all enjoy it, especially seeing our neighborhoods on the big screen when it comes out. I am fortunate to live in the Washington Square area, which, with its extraordinary row houses, makes it one of the most used sets. Filming in the city is so common, that one can be strolling about and unexpectedly come upon the making of a major film, which is what happened to me this evening. The actual filming was being done on the roofs of Washington Square North (see photo). This film will be called "August Rush," starring Robin Williams, Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. You can find a synopsis of the plot here.

Great picture!
I'm starstruck, lol.
Robin Willimas? LOL - I saw him for the first time in 'Mork and Mindy' when I moved to NYC in '77 - my boyfreind met him walking on the street and said, "My girlfriend is nuts about you and thinks you're going to be a big star" - he just laughed then.

I think 95% of all women are nuts about Robbie Williams, but that's not what it's about; nice night shot!!

They were breaking down so I did not see any actors - plus last nite was being filmed entirely on the roofs. I did overhear one girl earlier this week saying she met Robin on this location and he gave her a hug(they have been filming in New York for some time). I have seen numerous actors over the years - Woody Allen (several times - he loves the Village, used to live down here), Will Smith, Julia Roberts (going into Babbo) etc. Generally though, on the bigger films it is difficult to get as close to the action as one would like, and the shooting process is very long, so one would have to do a lot of waiting around on these location sets to see much. And yes, I was an "extra" once.

Doesn't this action complicate mobility, closing roads and areas constantly!

I agree with Santy. the lights on the branches are beautiful. then again, so is everything in this shot. each thing has its own identity yet you captured the unity of the whole thing. like a great director.
