Migration

There were very large demonstrations across the country today, which seem to have taken everyone by surprise, about the status of the illegal aliens and immigrants. This has come to a head because there have been proposals for federal laws that would make life much harsher for such people and counter proposals which would have the opposite effect. NYC has benefited greatly from newcomers and is very supportive of them. However, many across the country feel that not enough is being done to stop illegal immigration and that it makes for unfair competition between citizens and illegal workers. The march in NYC had a very diverse flavor, sometimes party like in atmosphere. There was music and food and the local government representatives came out and spoke in support of their quest for legitimization. Since most who live in NYC (and most Americans) have immigrant roots, it would be surprising if we were not supportive. It's the first time people from this group have done anything publicly or politically because generally they have been afraid to call attention to themselves, for obvious reasons.

Saw this news on yahoo. Hope they dont get rowdy as in most demo's.

As you can see, they are being politely herded along by the police, who are being very cooperative. Everybody knows that many who are marching are illegal aliens and can't afford to get arrested because they would be deported, so anything that would cause arrest is being avoided. That is also why it is remarkable that so many have come out to demonstrate because they really do tend to keep a very low profile...

I would think the only ones who could Logically be against immigration are the American Indians. Since the US is such a young country and made of immigrants (my whole family came to the US as an immigrant - none of them were Indian that I know, lol) And one great-grandfather jumped off ship and swam ashore (he was heading for a prison colony because he was a horse thief - an illegal alien in the family. *sigh*) LOL
I think this is a good time for illigal aliens to be legitimized so they can earn decent wages and pay taxes too.

Something will have to be worked out, because there are so many millions, more than 11 million that they know of, but also, once they are citizens, they will be "in the system" and paying taxes and that will change the pay scales for them, they will be competing with even newer newcomers who will take cash "under the table" and not pay for unemployment insurance or taxes or social security, so it's kind of an endless circle...

I think the issue of immigrants/cheap labor/fear for newcomers and so on play in a lot of our countries

Yes, I agree. It's an issue that all countries have to deal with. Here in Malaysia, the government has a hard time trying to level the issue but it's always easier to hire illegals (cheaper) as opposed to citizens who only want to make a fast buck and have no desires of doing menial labour. The turnover of illegals entering and leaving the country is extremely high. The sad thing is if they have an accident, they either die or are sent packing, usually with no compensation.

It's a sensitive issue, but it has to be resolved...there are many illegal aliens in the U.S but they also have rights...human rights that is that is many times violated because of the fact that they are there illegally.
