Snake Charmer

Here's a character that suddenly appeared draped with a gigantic snake, a large macaw, and a small alligator in his suitcase. His schtick was that he would charge to have your picture taken with them, the prices based on what you wanted to have in the photo - he offered all three to a woman for $15 - she seemed pleased to have the snake draped around her (see video here). At first charming, it soon became very exploitative of everyone concerned, including the animals; he was offering to sell snakes for $250. With concerns about exotic animals being taken from their natural habitats, this seems a questionable livelihood, but we wanted to show you this as a classic if extremely flamboyant example of a typical big city hustle. There's been much written about the classic NYC hustles and scams, some of which are still practiced today exactly the same way as in the 19th century on the same street corners. Perhaps in another era this fellow would have been an organ grinder with a monkey...

Love this site and it's pictures.
As a Brit that used to live in NY I really miss the city. Don't know if you do requests, but any chance of a picture of the Carnegie Deli and one of their monster sandwiches. I'm sure it's something that will amaze the non NYers.
Thanks for running this site.

Yep, I get the picture. There was a guy in Jakarta who tried to sell an eagle on the street and the price was really high. When I saw him, I just prayed for someone with a lot of cash and good intention would buy the bird and put it where it belong. Cause the authorities just didn't react. Nice picture though :)

The parrot looks quite smug up there on his perch!
Poor alligator and snake though - I bet they were fed up with being handed around!
(Great shot, BTW!)

I agree with your comments but I would also be concerned that two of these animals would want to eat the other two given the chance!!!!

We have a list a mile long of places we will shoot, in addition to any spontaneous occurences. We have only scratched the surface. So far we have focused primarily downtown where I live; most of the uptown photos are Lucy's (she works midtown). On weekends we get around more. And, sure, we'd love requests - I've added the Carnegie Deli.
