Evening Arch

The Washington Square Arch is one of my favorite NYC icons. It stands at the foot of Fifth Avenue, on the north side of Washington Square Park. It always reminds me of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, after which is was modeled. The arch recently got a much needed renovation - it was in serious disrepair. It is now quite beautiful - completely cleaned and restored, with banks of high power lights from below and the sides. This was shot in the late evening. At night it really glows - it is one of the nicest illuminated monuments in NYC. Unlike Paris, New York has few fountains or monuments - and a well lit one like this is even rarer. I would highly recommend seeing it at night if you get the chance.

Thank you for making me aware of this lovely arch. I will take your tip to heart to seek it out for a night time visit when we make it back to NYC. The roses under the Arc de Triomphe are my favorite detail of that monument, and it's so clear from your photo how well carried out the inspiration was.

This is really beautiful. Do you know if it is the same dimensions (is it big) like the Arc de Triomphe here?

Eric;
This arch is much smaller - I believe 77 feet versus 165 feet for the Triomphe. Plus, the public has never been allowed up. It has a small stairway to the top. One day my dream is to get up there and take some pictures. I will do a detailed post on the arch in the future.

Lovely photo! It's good to see it's been restored and cleaned up too.

Washington Square is so rich in history... but still keeps that bohemian edge to it, no doubt.

I'm afraid your photos and blogging are making me want to come back to NYC for a visit. It's been too long since I've felt the magic of manhattan.
