Staten Island Ferry

One of the most enjoyable excursions you can make on a nice day in NYC is the Staten Island Ferry - it is very underrated. So it was with great pleasure that when my best friend (who now lives out west) recently came into town, he suggested doing the ferry. The weather was nice. The views were great. And the experience of seeing the city and its environs from the water is something most New Yorkers don't do that often. The ferry is a 25 minute ride between lower Manhattan and Staten Island. Here's a short VIDEO of the arrival at both islands. In transit, you get views of Staten Island, New Jersey, Brooklyn, lower Manhattan's financial district and Battery Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges, the Verrazano Bridge, Governors Island, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the Hudson River and East River (extra photos here). And the cost to take the Ferry roundtrip? It's free.

I live in NC. My daughter/son in law live in NYC, Park Slope, and most recently, East Village. I LOVE your site. I live for the pics, being a photog. myself (old darkroom type). Your site is my daily love! I feel connected to NYC that way. I love the two black musicians the other day, who played 856-7425 (heck, forgot the right name of the piece). They had the keyboards on the shopping carts. When I come to NYC, I hope to find them. Love that sort of thing. Keep up the wonderful work..LJ in Cary NC

I LOVE the ferry- I've been riding it with my dad since I was a little kid. Took my (English) husband there on our first date, then took his parents for a trip when they came to visit. Word to the wise- stay away from Staten Island itself...get off the boat and get right back on. We tried to grab lunch before the next ferry and it was a disaster. Hop on a bus or the subway (or walk up Broadway) once you're back in Manhattan and go eat in Chinatown if you're hungry.

Thanks for all the positive feedback and support. We spend a lot of time on these posts - research and reading, multiple links, extra photos, occasional video. We hope our readership grows. I also hope the additional links in the text are obvious to everyone - in today's post for example, I feel the best photos are actually in the links.

I'll second the great photos thing... excellent presentation altogether!

You're doing a great job of blogging New York... the World's Home Town.

I thought I'd live on Staten Island when I first was looking for a place in NYC and going to the Parsons School of Design... but I decided it was too far to commute.

I like that Walt Whitman poem about passengers disembarking from the Staten Island Ferry:

"Just as you feel when you look on the river and sky, so I felt.
Just as any of you is one of a living crowd, I was one of a crowd;
Just as you are refresh’d by the gladness of the river and the bright flow, I was refresh’d;
Just as you stand and lean on the rail, yet hurry with the swift current, I stood, yet was hurried"

Some things never change... Whitman was ahead of his time.

I lived in NYC a while ago and now visit regularly. Your blog keeps me in touch with the place and feeds my addiction! The ferry is great and it never ceases to astonish me that it's free. I mean, in New York! Almost ironic. Great blog!!
