Art Deco Lobby

This is the lobby of 570 Lexington Avenue, originally the RCA Building and later the GE building one of the world's finest Art Deco masterpieces. This small but exquisite and elegant lobby is one of my favorites in NYC - vaulted silver and terracotta ceilings, terrazzo floors, polished marble walls with mosaic wave frieze, reliefs of swords and electric bolts, lamps with aquamarine glass and ornate nickel silver sconces. I love the elevators with the motifs above each - I understand the elevator cabs inside are rosewood-paneled. The subtle lighting gives the entire atmosphere a warm and wonderful feeling. I stop in anytime I am nearby. I recommend you do also if you are in the neighborhood ...

Very classy decor...

I was always struck by the contrast between the inside and outside worlds in Manhattan. The harshness of the outside world on the streets as compared to the riches and culture of the interiors.

Superbe photo pour un superbe immeuble. Les immeubles de la periode Art deco de NYC sont pour moi les plus beaux (voir le site Nyc Architecture - Page sur les Immeubles Art deco.

My goal is to show the diversity in the city. Although the interior world does permit a layer of insulation, there are still plenty of rough interior spaces. See my post in March on live poultry - this place is in a neighborhood which is rapidly gentrifying. Of course there are quite beautiful things in the outside world too - Fifth Avenue, for example. So even the diversity is diverse.
