Ice Skating in October

I was surprised to learn that ice skating outdoors at Rockefeller Plaza opens so early (this year on October 7). The Rock Center Plaza is at one end of the Channel Gardens. Above the skating rink is where a massive Christmas tree is installed each year. In the summer, this area is used for outdoor seating for the Rock Center Cafe. The Sea Grill flanks the other side of the rink. Skating in the plaza is a "must do", I suppose, for many visitors even though it is overpriced and somewhat crowded - Wollman Rink in Central Park is probably a nicer alternative. But, the way I see it, most experiences are about what you bring to them. So, if you desire to skate at Rock Center, don't be daunted by naysayers, be they residents or not. Go ahead, do it and tell all your friends how much fun you had. After all, like Central Park, the Empire State Building, Macys, the Statue of Liberty etc. - they're all classic NYC - enjoy ...

In all the times I've been to NYC, I've never been to RC. I mean to....but I guess I forget!

I've heard it's beautiful around Christmas (as is all of NYC)! I can't wait for your Christmas photo's! I hope there are some night shots!

Christmas is great in NYC - all the classic icons - Rock Center tree lighting, skating in Central Park, Santa at Macys, shopping on Fifth Avenue, store window displays at Saks, house decorations in Dyker Heights (Brooklyn) etc.

A classical indeed, but always enjoyable to see... You're rigt, early isn't it? An I am always amazed by this beautiful gilded Prometheus.

Having never skated, I'm sure I'd have a broken ankle in about 5 minutes flat, which might (i) curtail my enjoyment of the rest of the city and (ii) result in homelessness as an outcome of the medical costs (just joking - I insure to the hilt !), so I may admire the skaters from afar!

What a great way to spend an afternoon, is it available all year round?
