The annual Mermaid Parade took place today in Coney Island, celebrating the opening of the summer season at the beach. Coney Island has become run down and a bit rough around the edges. Arts groups have formed to work with its old time carnival side show atmosphere and to preserve what is left of its very old style burlesque and freak show aesthetic. The day was a little rainy, but that didn't stop them from parading. These three were in the competition for mermaid of the year, and are giving it their all. The costumes were beautiful and/or imaginative - we found the event (a first for both of us) to be extremely enjoyable. We will be posting again on this parade...

Mermaid Parade

Nice shot. The one in the middle isn't my idea of a mermaid, but then again, I've never seen one so who knows?
We'll be posting on the further adventures of...these were just some of the more decorus of the bunch that day, and it was a really nice parade, local but very well attended with a lot of enthusiasm from both the particpants and the spectators...the middle one is I think referring to the burlesque aspect of Coney Island, after the parade there is a big party where they have performances and such...

So cool! There is a photo in the back of the most recent National Geographic (the one with the pandas on the cover) of Coney Island in 1954 which is incredible.
I visited Coney Island a couple of years ago on July 4th (saw the hot dog eating contest!) and had a great time. Though it could use a little facelift in some areas. :) Would have been fun to see the mermaids!
Hi and great work! I was lucky enough to be in nyc for the mermaid parade a couple of years back, it was one of the highlights of the trip! Great to be reminded of how good heels, tattoos and fish inspired outfits look on the boardwalk.
