Step Softly
I was awed by the images created by falling and rising footsteps up and down the spiral glass staircase at the new Apple store at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue. Click here for more photos. This new store opened May 19th, 2006 with much fanfare including dozens of celebrities and CEO Steve Jobs himself. People had camped out overnight in the rain on the street for the opening at 5 PM. This location is super prime - across the street from the Plaza Hotel and Central Park - a glass cube entrance sits atop the plaza in front of the GM building and FAO Schwartz's flagship store - the 10,000 square foot retailing space itself is below street level. The store is open 24/7 365 days a year - a first for Apple. When seen lit at night, this becomes NYC's own I.M. Pei glass work. In fact, Steve Jobs has worked with Pei in the past and credits the glass pyramid entrance to the Louvre in Paris as being an influence in the store design ...

Different, a really interesting image.
moworld;
Thanks - trying to live up to my NYC diversity claim. Doesn't hurt to try different approaches in the photography itself.

amazing image...it takes a while to figure out the subject and perspective...great photo!
That is the coolest picture! I couldn't figure out what it was until I read your explanation.
It seems you have competition as there is another NYC DP! LOL! And I think she is following you.....her's is also of the new Apple store :O
Fascinating space. I hope you'll snatch a photo at night sometime.
a wower definitely! i shall look up the stairs the next time
Wonderful image, Brian.
It was very canny of I.M. Pei to incorporate the opacity motif (which has been such an important feature of Apple's product design and branding campaign over the past decade or so) into the aesthetics of his building: and, I might add, very creative of you to photograph some of its occupants from this dramatic - indeed, cinematic - angle.
Fantastic shots. Your photographs are always so professionally done. Hmmm...so it's at 59th and 5th...shall go and check it out.
interesting photo, and very artistic!!!
:))
i am afraid of stepping on the glass staircase sometimes.

Excellent photograph! We have a wonderful staircase, too, in the San Francisco store, but it's just a straight glass staircase, nothing quite like this. Apple has proven once again how superior they are when it comes to aesthetics. That glass building is really something else. Awesome!
In my visit to New York, I spent many nights going to this Apple Store in Fifth Avenue to send e-mails to family and friends in Barcelona.
It has been a great surprise remembering those nights...
Apple Store Fifth Avenue is a fantastic place (it's more than a simple shop!) with very nice shop assistants.
Very cool and too cool, as well (they have a high level of air conditioned!).
Excellent capture Brian. Unusual and atractive. I fooled me completely at first.
